January 2025 AI Ethics Round-up
January 2025 has sure been a long year. Check out some of the highlights of the last 31 days for AI Ethics.
Well, January 2025 is in the books. It might be a book that we'd rather forget about and maybe throw into the fire, but it's done. It took me some time to determine what to include in this round-up. Not only has a lot happened in the last 30 days, but this is also my first round-up in 6 months. There was a lot to sift through.
As much as I want to stay away from the U.S. political ... tomfoolery, it was impossible to ignore all the change last week. I struggled to keep up, but luckily the AI Safety Newsletter was there to help. The US has been thrown into regulatory chaos over the last week, and AISN does a good job of breaking down what's in and out at the Federal level. I'm sure we'll see additional AI shenanigans at the Federal level over the next months and years.
Just over a week ago, no one had ever heard of DeepSeek and now it’s all anyone can talk about in the AI space. After wiping out $1trn in value from the AI market, DeepSeek's emergence onto the world stage has spawned critical conversations from just about everyone. I've grabbed three articles that I found interesting and show the complexity of claims about how much DeepSeek did or didn't spend on developing the model. The first article about DeepSeek is from a Publication also called DeepSeek. As far as I was able to determine, they are not the same entity. But take with a grain of salt just in case.
Second, we have an article from
challenging some the claims about cost and performance, and reminding us to be critical of what we hear and the panic and hype.Lastly, we have
of expressing similar concerns about merit of DeepSeek’s claims, but taking it step further to also dig into the U.S. market (over?) reaction, the impact of export controls on AI.As an AI Governance Enthusiast (if such a thing exists), I was excited to discover
's 25 Practical Tips for AI Governance. Many organizations see AI Governance as an insurmountable problem, and it's relieving to see pragmatic advice. Bonus points for following Patel on LinkedIn because he always posts great content. In the same vein, after getting over the scariness factor, the next major hurdle to getting an AI governance program off the ground is funding. I found this article from
from to be helpful. I've gone through the process of pushing the business case for AI governance, and it would have been much easier with a resource like this article. If you’d like me to share one of your articles, don’t hesitate to reach out!
