About me
Hey there,
I'm Andy, a passionate technologist dedicated to exploring the profound impact of technology and AI on our world. With a bachelor's degree in rhetoric, a master's degree in media studies, multiple certifications in privacy law, and nearly 20 years of experience in the tech industry, I bring a rare blend of expertise to the table.
My studies in rhetoric and media transformed my perspective, revealing the tremendous power of words and the influence of media in shaping our ethics, morals, and values. I took those lessons and applied them to technology, and realized that technology is just as influential in shaping our ethics, morals and values.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked in diverse fields such as healthcare, veteran’s affairs, and most recently cybersecurity. I’ve played pivotal roles in the development of a digital ethics program, contributing to the creation of an AI Code of Ethics, and contributing responsible technology reports from non-profit All Tech Is Human. I also write a law, ethics and business column for the video game website, MassivelyOP.
Not to mention, as a gay guy in tech, I’ve experienced first hand what it feels like to be marginalized—both by the people making the tech, by the technology itself.
When I'm not immersed in the world of ethical AI and Tech, you'll find me lost in the pages of a book, exploring virtual realms as a lifelong gamer, or cultivating my karate skills as a proud holder of a Shodan (first-degree black belt) in Shotokan karate.
Byte-Sized Ethics is the culmination of my passions, studies, and experiences. Through this newsletter, I hope to make the world a little bit better by helping you unravel the intricate web of AI and Tech ethics. How Byte-Sized Ethics Came to Be
I've always been captivated by the profound impact of technology on our lives. But it wasn't until Google fired Timnit Gebru that I encountered the messy world of AI and Tech ethics and everything clicked into place. It was as if the universe conspired to align my passions with the emerging challenges we face in this digital age.
As I immersed myself in the ethical implications of technology, a burning desire to be part of the conversation started to grow within me. Yet, I initially held back. Many of the voices in the field seemed so accomplished, boasting PhDs and prestigious accolades. Who was I to contribute?
But I couldn't ignore the itch to speak up. It was during a conversation with a friend and mentor that inspired me to take the leap. He reminded me that my perspective, grounded in the fusion of rhetoric, media studies, privacy and technology, was valuable. He encouraged me to trust my own insights and share them with the world.
That same day, fueled by newfound confidence, I founded Byte-Sized Ethics. It became my vessel to navigate the ever-changing landscape of AI and Tech ethics. Byte-Sized Ethics is the culmination of my passions, studies, and experiences—all aimed at unraveling the gnarled mess of ethical dilemmas and making a tangible difference.
